Pfizer Boosters

The Tennessee Department of Health is following CDC recommendations and providing a booster dose of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine to certain populations.

Pfizer boosters are for the following individuals:

  • People 65 years and older and residents in long-term care settings should receive a booster shot of Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine at least 6 months after their Pfizer-BioNTech primary series
  • People aged 50–64 years with underlying medical conditions should receive a booster shot of Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine at least 6 months after their Pfizer-BioNTech primary series
  • People aged 18–49 years with underlying medical conditions may receive a booster shot of Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine at least 6 months after their Pfizer-BioNTech primary series, based on their individual benefits and risks
  • People aged 18-64 years who are at increased risk for COVID-19 exposure and transmission because of occupational or institutional setting may receive a booster shot of PfizerBioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine at least 6 months after their Pfizer-BioNTech primary series, based on their individual benefits and risks

Key Points:

  1. Boosters are ONLY Pfizer vaccines and ONLY for those who received Pfizer for their primary series
  2. Wait 6+ months after completing the initial two dose series before getting a booster
  3. Bring your vaccine card when getting a booster
  4. Appointments are recommended to keep wait time minimized
  5. Patients do not need to prove their diagnosis or health condition to be eligible for the booster dose
Booster Clarification Lists

Boosters vs Additional Dose:

  • Booster: a dose of vaccine when the initial sufficient immune response to a primary vaccine series is likely to have waned over time.
  • Additional dose or "third" dose: administration of an additional vaccine dose when the initial immune response following a primary vaccine series is likely to be insufficient. If you are looking for info on additional mRNA doses for immunocompromised individuals, click here.
